This is my story

When my daughter turned eight, everything changed.

Until then I thought I had it figured out. Routines. Structure. A rhythm. She listened. Things worked.

And then — pushback. Resistance. A completely different energy.

But what surprised me most wasn't her behavior.

It was mine.

I would ask once. Then again. Then five times.

Nothing.

And then I'd snap.

And suddenly — she's listening.

But now we're both upset. And I'm standing there thinking: Why does it take this much just to be heard?

Here's the part that really scared me.

If yelling is the only way she listens when I'm there — what happens when I'm not?

When a friend is louder than my voice. When pressure is high. When the moment is hard.

Will she know what to do — or just comply with the loudest voice in the room?

Because in that moment, they won't have your voice.

They'll only have what they've practiced.

"I didn't like who I was becoming. And if I didn't change this now — this becomes our relationship."
 

That was the moment.

I stopped trying to fix her behavior first. I started changing how I show up.

What is possible!

I stopped looking at her first. And started looking at me.

What am I feeling right now? What is actually in my control?

I thought her compliance was in my control. It wasn't.

Which meant — I wasn't raising someone to obey. I was raising someone to think.

And that's when it clicked.


"Yelling works when you're there. Peaceful parenting works when you're not."

My daughter is sixteen now.

Teen years are hard. She carries a lot of self-judgment. Any sign of authority can feel like a threat — and her energy rises fast.

That used to trigger me.

Now I see it differently.

When her voice goes up, I know — she's not attacking me. She's protecting herself.

So instead of matching her energy, I hold space.

"It looks like you're not available right now. Let's take a break and talk about it later."

She trusts that now. She knows I won't raise my voice. She doesn't have to fight.

We step away. We make space. We come back.

And we always come back.

That's the trust we built. Not because we stopped having hard moments. Because we learned what to do with them.

I'm Minoo. And this work is personal to me.

I didn't come to this because I had it all together. I came to it because I didn't.


I trained in how to stay calm when everything in you wants to react. How to listen so your teen feels heard. How to say the thing that connects — not the thing that shuts everything down.


I am still a work in progress. I stopped chasing perfect and started shifting — a little at a time. Home feels safer every day because of it.

Now I teach moms what I wish someone had handed me on the worst days.
